About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine in which thin needles are inserted into the body. It is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

The History of Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be dated back almost 5000 years with the earliest Chinese Medical text available around 305 B.C. Acupuncture was practiced and refined throughout the following hundreds of years and then brought into the west during the 1970’s.

How does Acupuncture relieve pain?

Acupuncture may relieve (both sensory and affective) inflammatory pain. This occurs through activation of a variety of bioactive chemicals through peripheral, spinal, and supraspinal mechanisms.

What is Chinese Medicine?

Chinese Medicine includes a full diagnosis of the health of your body. The initial consultation includes questioning on many things including your medical history, current medications and present day complaints. A treatment plan is designed which may include Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Chinese Herbs, massage and/or manual therapies.

Therapies Used

Acupuncture Needling

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine in which thin needles are inserted into the body. It is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The needles are manipulated manually or the needle may be further stimulated by electrical stimulation (electroacupuncture). Dry needling is another name for what we would refer to as Myofascial Acupuncture, Tendinomuscular Acupuncture and/or Sports Acupuncture.

Heat Therapy

Heat therapy is known to enhance circulation, making it beneficial for a wide variety of issues. Combining acupuncture with a heat lamp is a method used to improve blood flow in the targeted areas which may complement traditional acupuncture. The heat lamp utilised in our practice is an electromagnetic lamp heated with infrared light designed to improve microcirculation. It serves as a clinical alternative to moxibustion and is commonly referred to as an acupuncture heat lamp due to its frequent use during acupuncture treatments. Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy which consists of burning dried mugwort on particular points on the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the heat is believed to boost the patient’s energy and alleviate symptoms of coldness and stagnation that may be causing discomfort.

Glass Suction Cupping with Fire

Through suction, the skin is drawn into the cup by creating a vacuum in the cup placed on the skin over the targeted area. The vacuum is created by the heating and subsequent cooling of the air in the cup. The cup is usually left in place for somewhere between five and fifteen minutes. It is believed by some to help with pain, deep scar tissues in the muscles and connective tissue, muscle knots, and swelling; however, the efficacy of this is unproven.

Our Practitioners

Dr. Peter Gospos

Senior Practitioner and Clinic Founder, Registered Acupuncturist – BHSc (Acu)

Peter Gospos has been practicing Acupuncture for 20 years. He is passionate about achieving optimal health for all of his clients.

Peter offers an innovative approach to treatment with Neoclassical Acupuncture. Neoclassical Acupuncture is a palpatory style of Acupuncture that provides immediate feedback with each needle placed. The goal is to create a “domino effect” of clearing the root cause and sub-sequentially the symptoms from your body.

Peter prefers to use Ultra-Smooth Japanese style needles to ensure complete patient comfort. He also prefers to use a minimal amount of needles during your treatment.

Peter has a special interest in both acute and chronic musculo-skeletal pain. This includes low back pain, shoulder pain and knee pain. He also provides support for a wide range of general conditions such as headaches, migraines and digestive problems. He also supports clients to achieve mental well-being through the reduction of stress and anxiety.

Peter also offers support for women’s health (menstrual and menopausal issues, pregnancy health, induction of labour, fertility and IVF).

Peter has been registered with the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association (AACMA) since 2004. He is also government registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture Needle Size
Acupuncture Needle Size – Smaller than you think!

Acupuncture is virtually painless.

Our practitioners use a gentle insertion technique where the needles can hardly be felt during insertion.

Let’s also put the size of the needles used in an Acupuncture treatment into perspective. You could fit approximately 8 Acupuncture Needles inside a typical Doctor’s Medical syringe. Acupuncture needles are rounded towards the tip where as a medical syringe is sharp.

At Gold Coast Acupuncture we use ultra fine Japanese needles which are even smaller than traditional Chinese Acupuncture needles.
