What is Peripheral Neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy occurs when the nerves situated outside the brain and spinal cord, known as peripheral nerves, sustain damage. This condition frequently leads to symptoms such as weakness, numbness, and pain, predominantly affecting the hands and feet. Additionally, it may impact other regions and bodily functions, including those related to digestion and urination.
The peripheral nervous system transmits information from the brain and spinal cord, collectively referred to as the central nervous system, to various parts of the body via motor nerves. Conversely, sensory nerves relay sensory information back to the central nervous system.
Various factors can contribute to peripheral neuropathy, including traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic disorders, genetic predispositions, and exposure to harmful substances. Diabetes is one of the most prevalent causes of this condition.
Individuals suffering from peripheral neuropathy often characterize their pain as stabbing, burning, or tingling. In some cases, symptoms may improve, particularly if they are linked to a treatable underlying condition. Medications are available to alleviate the pain associated with peripheral neuropathy.
The main causes of Peripheral Neuropathy are:
- Diabetic neuropathy (DIPN) Associated with diabetes.
- Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy (CIPN) – A side effect of chemotherapy.
- Idiopathic neuropathy

Acupuncture for Peripheral Neuropathy Research
Current pharmacological treatments primarily aim to alleviate pain, achieving only modest results, and do not effectively address the symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy (PN), such as numbness and paraesthesia. Some of these treatments, particularly opioid analgesics, raise concerns regarding their benefit-to-harm ratios.
In the last twenty years, extensive research on acupuncture and electroacupuncture has demonstrated that these modalities are effective not only in reducing pain associated with PN but also in ameliorating numbness and paraesthesia.
Furthermore, many acupuncture studies related to PN have shown improvements in objective nerve conduction tests, in addition to the subjective improvements reported by patients. These findings in nerve conduction studies provide compelling evidence that acupuncture may promote the regeneration of peripheral nerves that are compromised in PN.
The above research suggests that Acupuncture may provide beneficial outcomes however other papers did not have the same findings so the evidence is regarded as mixed.

Peter Gospos has been practicing Acupuncture for 20 years. He is passionate about achieving optimal health for all of his clients.
Peter offers an innovative approach to treatment with Neoclassical Acupuncture. Neoclassical Acupuncture is a palpatory style of Acupuncture that provides immediate feedback with each needle placed. The goal is to create a “domino effect” of clearing the root cause and sub-sequentially the symptoms from your body.
Peter prefers to use Ultra-Smooth Japanese style needles to ensure complete patient comfort. He also prefers to use a minimal amount of needles during your treatment.
Peter has a special interest in both acute and chronic musculo-skeletal pain. This includes low back pain, shoulder pain and knee pain. He also provides support for a wide range of general conditions such as headaches, migraines and digestive problems.
