Acupuncture under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS / NDIA)

About Acupuncture Cover under the NDIS

Acupuncture used as part of traditional Chinese medicine is an alternative/complementary medicine. The National Disability Insurance Scheme have recently changed their definition of support as part of the NDIS act which came into effect in October 2024.

Alternative or complementary medicine is listed in Schedule 2 of the NDIS and is therefore not currently supported by the NDIS. Acupuncture used to treat health conditions, including chronic health conditions, or used to enhance wellbeing, is also not supported by the NDIS.

Can NDIS participants access traditional Chinese medicine and/or Acupuncture?

NDIS participants cannot use their NDIS funds to pay for these services just as they cannot use their funds to pay for other mainstream medical or alternative health treatments.

NDIS participants, like all other Australians, can choose to use traditional Chinese medicine and/or Acupuncture to support their health and wellbeing and to treat their health conditions.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture Needle Size
Acupuncture Needle Size – Smaller than you think!

Acupuncture is virtually painless.

Our practitioners use a gentle insertion technique where the needles can hardly be felt during insertion.

Let’s also put the size of the needles used in an Acupuncture treatment into perspective. You could fit approximately 8 Acupuncture Needles inside a typical Doctor’s Medical syringe. Acupuncture needles are rounded towards the tip where as a medical syringe is sharp.

At Gold Coast Acupuncture we use ultra fine Japanese needles which are even smaller than traditional Chinese Acupuncture needles.
