Acupuncture for Neck Pain

Neck Pain Acupuncture Gold Coast

Neck pain, medically known as cervicalgia, can persist anywhere from a few days to several years, depending on its underlying cause. Some frequent contributors to neck pain include physical strain, bad posture, mental stress, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, pinched nerves, tumors, and various other health conditions.

Neck pain, often referred to as cervicalgia, is discomfort that occurs in or around your spine just below your head. The neck is also known as the cervical spine. This type of pain is commonly associated with various injuries and medical conditions.

There are two main types of neck pain: axial neck pain, which is primarily felt in the neck area, and radicular neck pain, which radiates to other regions like the shoulders or arms. Neck pain can be classified as acute, lasting from a few days to six weeks, or chronic, which persists for more than three months.

If left untreated, neck pain can disrupt your daily life and diminish your overall quality of life.

Symptoms of neck pain can vary depending on the underlying cause. Here are some examples:

– A persistent ache.
– A stabbing or burning pain.
– A shooting pain that travels from their neck to their shoulders or arms.

Neck pain may involve other symptoms, including:

– Headache.
– Stiffness in your neck, shoulders and upper back.
– Being unable to turn your neck or tilt your head.
– Numbness or tingling (pins and needles) feeling in your shoulders or arms.

How does Acupuncture relieve Neck pain?

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine in which thin needles are inserted into the body. It is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Acupuncture may relieve (both sensory and affective) inflammatory pain. This occurs through activation of a variety of bioactive chemicals through peripheral, spinal, and supraspinal mechanisms.

Neck Pain Acupuncture Research

A recent study[1] was conducted by researchers at Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Sichuan, China, which involved 716 participants suffering from chronic neck pain.

The study discovered that personalised Acupuncture could help alleviate chronic neck pain for as long as 24 weeks when compared to sham acupuncture and a group that simply waited for treatment.

Researchers emphasised the importance of these findings, noting that typical interventions like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids often come with unwanted side effects and complications. Therefore, non-drug therapies such as acupuncture are viewed as safer and more suitable alternatives.
